Proposed dog park moves forward with land clearing, fundraisers
A freshly cleared plot of land is giving Dartmouth dog owners their first vision of a proposed off-leash dog park in town.
A section of the Dartmouth Regional Parks and Trails off of Old Fall River Road — the site of the proposed 12-acre dog park — has been cleared of trees over the past few weeks, said Diane Camacho, president of the non-profit Dartmouth Dog Advisory Work Group.
“It’s a huge step in the right direction,” Camacho said. “When you go there now, you can see it’s the big area that will eventually become the dog park.”
Meetings are planned with the town over the next few weeks to discuss how to clear left behind tree stumps and level the area, Camacho said.
The location at 443 Old Fall River Road was finalized in 2012, after Parks and Recreation decided it had no use for the land due to elevation changes, heavy tree coverage, and its close proximity to wetlands.
A smaller, temporary dog park is also planned nearby. A half-acre site has been selected, but because of winter weather, a time to install fencing and officially open the park is still being nailed down.
The all-volunteer organization relies exclusively on donations and fundraisers to sustain itself. Its biggest fundraiser of the year will feature Magician Matt Roberts on April 9 at 2 p.m. at the middle school.
Tickets are $10, and can be purchased through Jennifer Mello (508-965-8243) or Jo-Anne Gallant (774-526-9866), or by emailing dartmouthdogpark17@gmail.com. Tickets will also be sold at the door. The group is also planning a wine tasting in June.
