Dartmouth man charged for stabbing woman in Chelsea
Angel Alvarez, 68 of Dartmouth, was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole on Wednesday Feb. 11 for murder.
On May 8, 2023 Alvarez stabbed Margarita Morehead multiple times, resulting in her death. She was a mother of four, and as someone who was loving, respected and “a pillar of the community,” according to her children in court.
Alvarez pleaded guilty to second degree murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, as well as violating a protection order, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office.
The two had been dating for years, with him occasionally with her in Chelsea, Massachusetts. She broke up with him for his tendency to be jealous and hostile, and he frequently accused her of cheating. She got a restraining order against him in October 2022, preventing contact.
The two stayed in contact regardless, and were together in her apartment on the day of her death. They were arguing over her attempts to break up when he hit her twice, before taking a kitchen knife and stabbing her multiple times in the chest and back. He cut two of his fingers off in the process before leaving the scene.
A neighbor heard her scream, and saw Alvarez leaving a trail of blood as he left her apartment. The neighbor did not contact the police but checked her apartment door multiple times and heard breathing. Forty minutes later, the neighbor's partner called a domestic violence hotline, who alerted the police.
When police arrived, she was unresponsive. Morehead died at the hospital from her injuries, having bled to death.
Alvarez was caught on security camera leaving the building and getting into a red sedan with a mismatched hood, which was found abandoned with bloodstains inside.
He attempted to avoid police and get rid of evidence such as his clothing with bloodstains and his phone. He had called others admitting to the crime and stating he was considering self harming. He turned himself in that night.
Alvarez has the possibility of parole after 17 years served in prison.
