Baked to perfection: Girl Scouts close out the cookie-selling season
For the past several weekends, girl scouts across the country have been in the thralls of their cookie-selling season, and the girls in Troop 77339 were no exception. After weekends of work, their bout of entrepreneurship has come to a close.
On Saturday, March 7, the girls sold their cookies outside of Paige’s Paracords to close out the season and sell the few boxes they had leftover.
About two hours into selling cookies, Vienna Buck, 12, said that the biggest sale of the day so far was 13 boxes.
“In the beginning today it was fine, but we had this rush hour [and] I kept trying to restock,” said Amelia Castellano, 10.
Gabriella Bradley, 9, said they sold between 200 and 500 boxes every weekend and that they probably sold around 3,000 boxes since January.
For Bradley, meeting customers — whether they’re stopping by with their families and pets or women who used to be girl scouts — is her favorite part of selling Girl Scout Cookies.
“Sometimes you get to meet cute little babies and dogs,” she said.
Kaylee Luques, 9, added that the people who used to be girl scouts sometimes tell them how much the cookies used to go for.
She called it “interesting” and said that one woman told them she used to sell cookies for 99 cents.
The girls have also been told that there was a time when they used to be sold for 75 or even 35 cents.
Buck said that her favorite part of selling cookies is communicating with the customers and learning how to be responsible with money.
Bradley agreed but noted that the cold weather can make it difficult to handle the cash.
“It’s hard when it’s cold in your fingers. Then you want to wear the thick gloves, but they don’t really handle the money,” she said.
The girls said that some of their favorite parts of being girl scouts are earning badges, going camping and creating things, all of which is made possible through selling cookies, which was another one of the girls’ favorite parts of being scouts.
All of the girls selling cookies outside of Paige’s Paracord have been girl scouts for at least two years and are seasoned cookie sellers.
“It’s just fun because you get to talk to your friends and just have a good time while you’re here,” Luques said.
