“This is a fun little holiday tournament thing for us to raise money for the league and for the kids to play some basketball during the winter break when they’re normally cooped up inside,” said Ryan Goyette, who is a coach for the fourth and fifth grade division.
The championship started with all the teams playing in their grade divisions, 14 teams in total, until only two teams from each grade remained. These teams faced off on Saturday.
“It’s been a long weekend, and it’s been fun,” said DGAL commissioner Steve DeCosta, who also is a coach for the middle school division, “The girls all had a blast. They played with their friends and it was good.”
All of the teams are named after college teams, which Goyette guesses is to introduce the girls to different schools at a young age.
The day started with the second and third grade division, the second and third grade Duke team faced off against the PC Friars, and won 8-2.
In the fourth and fifth grade division, UConn faced off against the fourth and fifth grade Duke team and won 17-3.
The morning ended with the middle school division, when Clemson faced off against Dartmouth and won 20-17. ]
During the game, there was a 50-50 raffle, which raised $233 for DGAL.
“The girls all played great, and they had fun,” said DeCosta.
