Learn about the Loose Screws

While the band Loose Screws has been performing together since the 1990s, its members first started dabbling in music years before.

“We’ve been playing since we were kids,” said singer Scott Avila, who is from Dartmouth and one of the founding members. “That’s just the way it goes.”

Avila has been playing in bands since he was 12, and now he is the only original member left. 

Loose Screws plays across the state, performing songs in genres like country, hits from the 1970s, and also some original pieces.

“I love these guys,” he said. “With these guys … you all get along and it’s a joy to be around them, honestly, all the time.”

Avila plays the bass, although he was originally playing the guitar when the band formed. He played with his brother, along with a drummer. However, they recently replaced their original drummer with Richie.

They brought in Matt as a drummer and John and Sean as guitarists. John is Matt’s son, and a new addition to the band. While Richie originally joined the band as the drummer, he’s now the vocalist. 

When Avila’s brother left the band a year ago, Avila took over as the bassist. 

Avila said he loves playing in Dartmouth, as it gives him a chance to see people he doesn’t see often. 

When Loose Screws played at Apponagansett Beach on July 8 as part of the ongoing Summer Concert Series, his great aunt came to watch him perform. As it was her birthday, he paused the show to wish her a happy birthday and give her a flower. 

“I play every day,” said Avila, “It’s been my whole life for a long, long time.”
