To the Editor: Regarding the September 1 primary

Two months ago, it may have seemed as though only one candidate was running to replace Chris Markey as our state representative. Steve Medeiros entered the race early, placing signs of all sizes across Dartmouth, while the other candidates took a more restrained approach.

Today, the leading Democratic candidates appear to be Ed Pacheco and Steve Medeiros.

Medeiros has emphasized his experience in real estate. Beyond broad statements about his beliefs, however, he has not clearly stated where he stands on the important issues facing our area.

Pacheco, by contrast, has outlined positions on several key issues, making his priorities clear. He supports controlled growth, agricultural preservation, and transparent government.

Medeiros has yet to identify his specific priorities.

A recent article in Dartmouth Week reported that “Dartmouth does not have the capacity in the wastewater treatment facility for the many planned and proposed housing projects.” At the same time, a ballot question proposes reducing lot sizes to 5,000 square feet, while Town Meeting recently approved funding to preserve agricultural land and open space. These issues show why we need someone who understands the importance of a balance between controlled growth and values agriculture, open space, and affordable housing.

I strongly urge voters to support Ed Pacheco for state representative in the September 1 primary.
