Cyclists passing through Dartmouth were on the 100-mile route. Dartmouth saw a stream of bikers, many in brightly-colored kits, throughout Sunday for the Buzzards Bay Coalition Watershed Ride.
Riders pedaled through town in support of the coalition’s work to protect and restore clean water in Buzzards Bay and its surrounding lands, and the 428 participants in this year’s ride have raised $226,000 so far.
As riders passed over the Padanaram Bridge and through the village, Nancy Jordan stood on a corner to halt traffic so people could cycle by safely. She’s been volunteering at the ride for at least a decade, and said she loves helping out in the town she lives in.
“I play traffic cop, I go out in the street, make sure I stop people when I see them coming so they can safely come around the corner, and then I yell ‘Prospect Street,’ because that's where they go and turn right,” Jordan explained. “I've done this for many many years, and it's really fun to be on this corner.”
She said in years past she worked at the end of the ride, and would sometimes bring her massage table and help riders with sore muscles. Now that she’s a little older, she doesn’t like “schlepping” her equipment around and prefers to encourage riders as they pass through Dartmouth.
