Errors on SMART Demand bills
There was a recent printing error on the SMART Bill Demand sent to around 1,500 customers. The total amount was correct, but the balanced due was incorrect.
There were three numbers on the bill; the balance due was listed at $120 instead of $140, the demand was listed as $20 and the interest of $3.49 for a total of $163.49.
This is due to the fact that the Department of Public Works works with a number of companies to create the bills, including the company that publishes the digital version and the company that prints the bill.
Once a bill is produced it goes through the Bill Trust company, who creates the bills and sends back around 30 proofs. This is reviewed by a business manager, then the assistant Public Works director before publication.
Before a bill is published, copies are sent to Public Works for review. However, there have been staging changes with new employees that caused some reviews to be missed. This was partially due to just checking the front of the bill rather than both sides.
From now on, Director of Public Works Tim Barber stated they plan to be more careful in the future.
