Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials were spotted in Dartmouth on Tuesday, Sept. 22 around 8 a.m. During this one person was taken by ICE according to the New Bedford Light, João Ferreira.
Ferreira was living in Dartmouth with a green card. In 1992, he was charged with two counts of indecent assault and battery on someone under 14 and two counts of indecent exposure. The case was continued without a finding and closed.
The Dartmouth Week has reached out to ICE for comment, who have not answered.
According to Lieutenant Keith DeCosta, the Dartmouth Police were unaware of ICE’s plans to be in Dartmouth and were uninvolved with the detentions. A call was made to the Dartmouth Police at 8:11 a.m. stating there were ICE agents at Faunce Corner Road.
Witnesses reported seeing about seven ICE vehicles in the Dartmouth Mall Parking lot. The cars had blue lights activated.
Three asked individuals were seen stopping vehicles at the intersection of I95 and Faunce Corner Road.
This same day videos show ICE vehicles stopping cars as far down State Road as at the intersection of State Road and Reed Road.
During this, local business Carvalho’s Landscaping stated on Facebook that one of their trucks was pulled over. The company clarified in the post that all their workers have provided the company with the necessary legal documents.
Carvalho’s has also not responded to the request for comment.
According to LUCE New Bedford, a company that takes community tips of ICE spottings, officers were spotted on Monday, Sept. 11 at the Marriott Hotel in Dartmouth.
On Monday, there were four confirmed vehicles on sight with four others suspected to have been in the area.
There were also videos posted online showing that ICE was in residential neighborhoods in Dartmouth.
Following around 12 arrests on Sept. 21 in New Bedford, Governor Maura Healey demanded that ICE publicize who they have arrested and why. As of Friday, Sept. 25 ICE has not given any updates on their operations in Massachusetts.
It is unconfirmed whether ICE is still present in their current surge in Dartmouth. According to LUCE’s social media, ICE is always present in New Bedford.
