Mural reflects the community, integrity at CrossFit Dartmouth
A blank gym wall once soaked in sweat and scuff marks has transformed into a burst of color, culture and community at CrossFit Dartmouth now that a massive new mural greets every athlete who walks through the door.
“This wall is where we put a lot of sweat and integrity into our workouts,” said owner Jason Caldas of New Bedford, who co-owns the gym with Justin Coelho of Dartmouth. “Over time, it was getting destroyed, so we wanted to revamp the wall — bring some energy into the room. The mural really does all that and really gives it a big vibe in there.”
Created by Fall River artist Zachary Meunier, the mural took two months to complete and incorporates images inspired by CrossFit movements, gym culture and even the Native American which was part of the gym’s original logo. Meunier, a landscaper by day who has painted murals for two decades, said the collaboration was one of his most rewarding.
Meunier said he had creative freedom, but also received some useful feedback: “It’s just been a great balance of artist and business.”
Throughout the process, gym-goers offered input and inspiration.
“Everything they do on the wall — the wall pushups and stuff — that’s tough stuff, man,” Meunier added with a laugh.
Caldas said the mural reflects the spirit the gym has cultivated over its 13 years in business: high energy, community-focused and integrity.
“It’s only as intense as you want it to be. We have beginners coming every day,” he said. “The mural really ties all that together.”
The sheer scale of the work ensures it’s more than just a backdrop. Because of the size, people can catch different details every time they look at it, Meunier said.
“I love community-based stuff,” he added. “I would love to do more of this.”
