Louis M. Furtado, 77, of East Freetown, formerly of Dartmouth, died suddenly Monday, July 8 at Rhode Island Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Gilberta (Frias) Furtado with whom he shared 54 years of marriage and son of the late Manuel and Beatriz (Ferreira) Furtado.

Born in Lomba do Cavaleiro, Povoacao, Sao Miguel, Acores, he immigrated to New Bedford in 1957, resided in Dartmouth for 20 years and the past 6 years in East Freetown.

Mr. Furtado was a parishioner of Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Church. He had been an active parishioner of the former St. John The Baptist Church where he was a member of the Holy Name Society and served in various capacities including president of the feast committees.

He was employed as a machinist at Borg-Warner until his retirement.

His family includes his wife, Gilberta Furtado of East Freetown; 3 sons, Lewis A. Furtado snd his wife, Luisa of New Bedford, Scott W. Furtado and his wife, Amy of East Freetown and Paul M. Furtado and his wife, Mairead of Mendon; 4 grandchildren, Brendan Furtado, Colby Furtado, Mia Furtado and Raegan Furtado; 1 brother, Joao Furtado and his wife, Maria of New Bedford; 2 sisters, Dora Ferreira of New Bedford and Lidia Deus of Dartmouth; brother-in-law, Abilio Pacheco of Toronto, Canada and sister-in-law, Dolores Furtado of New Bedford; several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Jaime Furtado, Manuel Furtado, Guilhermina Raposo, Naria Sousa, Jorgelina Pacheco, Gloria Amaral and Ilda Ferreira and brother-in-law of the late Jose Deus and Maria Gloria Furtado.
